Marginalisation of Women in Peacebuilding

  • Women are prevented from taking part in decision making.
  • Prevented from taking part in political discussion
  • Earn less for same work
  • No reintegration in home communities after trauma

Women are often stereotyped as victims, deemed vulnerable and in need of protection. They are sometimes not even visible in violence and peacebuilding narratives.

This restricts ability to recognize and engage with women, those peacebuilders and those engaged in violence (10-30% of armed forces or groups).

Consequences of Marginalisation of women

  • Women are usually more vulnerable to exploitation, sexual harassment and abuse.
  • There is a higher prevalence rate of HIV among young women.
  • Women more often suffer from domestic violence caused by drug abuse, aggression or trauma of their husbands or other male family members.
  • Women face even higher barriers to find work.
